The "burn-in" phenomenon of AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) screens refers to the permanent or semi-permanent retention of images on the screen even after they have been replaced by other content. This typically occurs when certain pixels have been used consistently for displaying static images or elements with high contrast for extended periods of time.
AMOLED screens consist of individual organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) for each pixel, and these diodes emit light when an electrical current passes through them. When a pixel displays the same image for an extended period, the organic materials in that pixel can degrade unevenly, resulting in some pixels aging faster than others. This causes those pixels to appear dimmer or discolored compared to the rest of the screen.
Burn-in is most noticeable when you display a new image or switch to a different application, and remnants of the previous image are still faintly visible. Over time, this effect can become more pronounced and permanent.
To mitigate the risk of burn-in on an AMOLED screen:
- Avoid displaying static images for extended periods, especially those with high contrast and brightness.
- Adjust screen brightness to an appropriate level.
- Use features like screen timeout and sleep mode to turn off the screen when not in use.
- Enable features like screen savers or pixel shifting to help prevent burn-in.
